A method for processing image data of an image sensor, said image sensor comprises a sensor area of a pixel matrix providing image pixel data, wherein the pixel matrix comprises phase detection pixels at pre-defined locations, and wherein a set of image pixel data comprises phase detection information of said phase detection pixels, the method comprising: selecting either a procedure A) of calculating image pixel data for the pre-defined locations of the phase detection pixels specified for symmetric colour channel arrangement in case that the respective phase detection pixels are positioned in a colour channel that exhibits symmetry in the respective colour channel in the respective colour channel or a procedure B) of calculating image pixel data for the pre-defined locations of the phase detection pixels specified for asymmetric colour channel arrangement in case that the respective phase detection pixels are positioned in a colour channel that exhibits asymmetry in the respective phase detection pixels.
