1. A method comprising:
encoding a video,
wherein the video comprises a first image and a second image,
wherein the first image is for display at a first time,
wherein the second image is for display at a second time,
wherein the first image comprises a first array of pixel colors,
wherein the first array of pixel colors encode first luminances,
wherein the first luminances lie within a first luminance range,
wherein the second image comprises a second array of pixel colors,
wherein the second array of pixel colors encode second luminances,
wherein the second luminances lie within the first luminance range,
wherein the first image has a first value of a first characteristic luminance,
wherein the first characteristic luminance is one of a plurality of characteristic luminances, wherein the first value is obtained by calculating the first characteristic luminance on a first portion of the first luminances of the first image,
wherein the second image has a second value of the first characteristic luminance,
wherein the second value is obtained by calculating the first characteristic luminance on a second portion of the second luminances of the second image,
wherein the first value is different from the second value;
producing a video signal,
wherein the video signal comprises an encoding of the first array of pixel colors, an encoding of the second array of pixel colors, and a descriptive data,
wherein the descriptive data comprises at least one of the first value and the second value;
calculating a third value,
wherein the first image has the third value of a second characteristic luminance,
wherein the second characteristic luminance is one of the plurality of characteristic luminances,
wherein the second characteristic luminances is different from the first characteristic luminance,
wherein the third value is obtained by calculating the second characteristic luminance on a third portion of the first luminances;
calculating a fourth value,
wherein the second image has the fourth value of the second characteristic luminance,
wherein the fourth value is obtained by calculating the second characteristic luminance on a fourth portion of the second luminances of the second image; and
coding at least one of the third and the fourth value in the descriptive data.
