1. A method comprising:
a) identifying, by at least one of at least one processor, an electronic baggage source message (BSM) associated with an arrival of a luggage item of a passenger,
wherein the electronic BSM comprises an airport code associated with an airport and travel data for the passenger of a first mode of travel carrier of the luggage item, the electronic BSM being received from a computer system associated with the first mode of travel carrier, and
wherein the travel data comprises at least one of a passenger name record (PNR) number of the passenger, a name of the passenger, or airline information and a flight number of the passenger;
b) matching, by at least one of the at least one processor, at least one of the PNR number of the passenger, the name of the passenger, or the airline information and the flight number of the passenger included in the electronic BSM with stored travel data related to a manifest for a second mode of travel different from the first mode of travel, wherein the second mode of travel is local to the airport code;
c) based on a match being found in b), extracting, by at least one of the at least one processor, an International Air Transport Association (IATA) license plate number from the electronic BSM;
d) creating, by at least one of the at least one processor, an electronic luggage item manifest record for the luggage item, wherein the electronic luggage item manifest record comprises the IATA license plate number and the PNR number of the passenger; and
e) accessing the electronic luggage item manifest record, by at least one of the at least one processor, in response to receiving information from a predetermined electronic acquiring device that optically scans or electronically acquires an originating hardcopy bag tag identifier (OH-BTI) associated with or printed on an originating hardcopy bag tag from the first mode of travel carrier that is attached to the luggage item.
