1. A method of determining information associated with at least one target tissue of a patient using a needle comprising at least one lumen extending along a length thereof, a cladding layer applied to and circumferentially surrounding an exterior of the needle and an optically-transmissive coating applied to and circumferentially surrounding an exterior of the cladding layer, the method comprising:
inserting the needle into the patient to access the target tissue by puncturing with the needle an outer tissue structure overlaying the target tissue;
after the outer tissue structure is punctured, transmitting, to the target tissue, a first optical radiation using the optically-transmissive coating or the cladding layer;
receiving, from the target tissue, at a processor, a second optical radiation via the other of the optically-transmissive coating or the cladding layer based on the first optical radiation; and
determining, by the processor, based on the second optical radiation, data characterizing at least one of (i) at least one characteristic of the target tissue, (ii) at least one location of the target tissue, and (iii) a location of a tip of the needle with respect to the target tissue,
wherein the optically-transmissive coating is provided at least at a distal end of the needle.
