1. A compound of formula (I), or a spirolactone form and/or salt thereof:

wherein:
R1 is methyl or C2-6 alkyl or -L1-RB1;
R2 is methyl, C2-6 alkyl, or -L1-RB1;
L1 is a linker comprising a combination of two or more groups selected from alkyl, —C(O)NH—, —S—, —O—, and/or —S(O)—;
R3 is —COOH, CO2, or SO3;
each of E, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, and R9 is H;
each RN1 is independently H, methyl, or C2-4 alkyl;
each RN2 is independently H, methyl, or C2-4 alkyl;
provided that
(i) at least one of R1 or R2 is -L1-RB1, and the RB1 group comprises a nucleic acid-binding moiety or a cytoskeleton-binding moiety,
wherein the nucleic acid-binding moiety or the cytoskeleton-binding moiety is selected from
