1. A method of monitoring stress on a substrate, the method comprising:
forming a substrate comprising a composition comprising:
a thermosetting polymer network, and
a mechanophore covalently bonded to the thermosetting polymer network,
wherein the mechanophore is derived from cinnamamide;
measuring an optical property;
using the substrate;
measuring the optical property of the substrate after use of the substrate; and
comparing the measurement of the optical property of the substrate to a measurement of the optical property of the substrate prior to use, wherein comparing the measurement of the optical property is correlated to a stress applied to the substrate.
