A method of inducing an immune response to an infection caused by a virus in a mammal or bird, comprising administering a substantially antigen-free composition comprising a saponin, a sterol, a quaternary amine, and a polyacrylic polymer to the mammal or bird, wherein said virus is selected from the group consisting of avian herpesvirus, Bovine herpesviruses, Canine herpesviruses, Equine herpesviruses, Feline viral rhinotracheitis virus, Marek's disease virus, Ovine herpesviruses, Porcine herpesviruses, Pseudorabies virus.
