1. A method for reducing the likelihood of developing depression in an individual human being, comprising:
providing in the gut of the individual human being bacteria from a population of beneficial bacteria selected from the group consisting of Coprococcus, Roseburia, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii;
administering fiber to the individual to maintain a therapeutically effective amount of the beneficial bacteria in the gut of the individual; and
reducing bacteria in the gut of the individual selected from the group consisting of Pediococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, and Leuconostoc bacteria.
