1. A medical insertion device, comprising:
an introducer assembly, including a dilator coaxially disposed in a sheath, the dilator removably engaged to the sheath in an insertion configuration;
a needle coaxially disposed in the dilator, the needle having a distal tip and a proximal end coupled to a needle hub;
a guidewire disposed in the dilator alongside of the needle; and
a housing removably engaged to the dilator, the needle hub movably disposed in the housing between a first locked position, a second locked position, and a third locked position, wherein:
in the first locked position, the distal tip of the needle extends from a distal end of the dilator and the guidewire is within the dilator;
in the second locked position, the distal tip of the needle extends a short distance beyond the distal end of the dilator such that the distal tip of the needle is proximate to the distal end of the dilator, and the guidewire is within the dilator; and
in the third locked position, the distal tip of the needle is within the dilator and the guidewire extends from the distal end of the dilator.
