1. A traffic pole detection system in a vehicle, the traffic pole detection system comprising:
a navigation sensor;
a communication system;
a processor; and
a storage device storing instructions in non-transitory memory, the instructions executable by the processor to:
identify a prospective referring traffic pole, wherein identifying the referring traffic pole comprises imaging an environment of the vehicle using cameras mounted in or on the vehicle, detecting traffic poles present in images from the cameras, determining a current location information of the vehicle, the current location information including a lane information for a travelling lane that the vehicle is travelling on, obtaining a referring traffic pole information for the travelling lane based on the current location information of the vehicle, and matching the detected traffic poles to the referring traffic pole information based on an amount of similarity to one or more parameters of the referring traffic pole information;
responsive to identifying the prospective referring traffic pole, receive cryptographic pole data via the communication system from a transmitter associated with the prospective referring traffic pole including an associated traffic sign mounted thereon, the cryptographic pole data including a cryptographic representation of the prospective referring traffic pole; and
selectively control one or more vehicle systems of the vehicle based on cryptographic verification of the prospective referring pole using the obtained referring traffic pole information.
