1. A graphics processing unit, comprising:
a plurality of graphics processing cores, each of the plurality of graphics processing cores comprising a render engine and a display engine,
wherein at least one render engine is to:
detect that a first pixel of a surface is a monochrome pixel and encode the first pixel with a first encoding comprising:
a first bit having a first value to indicate that the first pixel is monochrome; and
a luminance value to indicate a grayscale;
detect that a second pixel of the surface is a color pixel and encode the second pixel with a second encoding comprising:
a first bit having a second value to indicate that the second pixel is color; and
a plurality of color values; and
store the surface comprising the first pixel and the second pixel in a memory.
