1. A compound of formula (IV):

or the beta-anomer thereof,
where:
n is 0 and Y is absent;
m is 1;
R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted primary amino;
R2-R5 are each H;
R6, R7 and R8, which may be the same or different, are each independently H or a hydroxyl-protecting group; or wherein R6 is a phosphate; and
X is an anion selected from an anion of a substituted carboxylic acid, an anion of an unsubstituted carboxylic acid other than an anion of formic acid, an anion of a substituted or unsubstituted phosphate, an anion of a substituted or unsubstituted sulfate, an anion of a substituted or unsubstituted carbonate, and an anion of a substituted or unsubstituted carbamate.
