1. A medical device comprising:
a memory configured to store a base interval, an adjustment interval and a rate smoothing increment;
a sensor configured to produce a sensor signal;
a pulse generator configured to generate ventricular pacing pulses; and
a control circuit coupled to the sensor and the pulse generator and configured to:
detect atrial events from the sensor;
control the pulse generator to deliver ventricular pacing pulses synchronized to the atrial events detected from the sensor signal;
determine actual Vp-Vp intervals where each actual Vp-Vp interval extends between two consecutively delivered ventricular pacing pulses;
adjust the base interval stored in the memory by, based on the actual Vp-Vp intervals, adding or subtracting the adjustment interval to or from the base interval;
determine a rate smoothing interval as the adjusted base interval plus the rate smoothing increment; and
start the rate smoothing interval to schedule a next ventricular pacing pulse in response to the pulse generator delivering a ventricular pacing pulse.
