1. An electronic gaming system comprising:
a memory; and
a processor configured to execute instructions stored in the memory, which when executed, cause the processor to:
cause display of a plurality of reels in a primary play area for a first play instance;
cause display of a plurality of symbol columns in a secondary play area, each symbol column of the plurality of symbol columns being positioned in association with a reel of the plurality of reels;
generate an output of a random number generator (“RNG”);
perform a lookup of a weighted table stored in the memory using the RNG output;
distribute, based on the lookup, a number of secondary symbols into the plurality of symbol columns for the first play instance, the number of secondary symbols supplementing symbols on the plurality of reels; and
cause display of an outcome of the first play instance, wherein the outcome is based at least in part on attributing the secondary symbols to their associated reels.
