1. A cardiac assist system comprising:
an expandable cup having a transport state and an operational state, the expandable cup comprising a pumping chamber and at least one inflow aperture;
an outflow nozzle coupled to the expandable cup and in communication with the pumping chamber, wherein the outflow nozzle has a length and shape selected such that when the expandable cup is positioned within a left ventricle of a heart, an outlet of the outflow nozzle is downstream from an aortic valve of the heart;
a volume displacement member positioned inside the expandable cup and movable between a low-volume state and a high-volume state;
a catheter assembly connected to the volume displacement member during operation; and
a control unit connected to the catheter assembly,
wherein the control unit is configured to cyclically move the volume displacement member between the low-volume state and high-volume state at a frequency of at least 600 beats per minute (bpm).
