1. A method comprising:
initiating, by a first node in a mesh network, a carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) session while the first node is in a first mode, wherein the CSMA/CA session is associated with a request to transmit a data message to a second node in the mesh network and the first mode is a unicast mode or a broadcast mode;
wherein initiating the CSMA/CA session comprises determining availability of a channel associated with a first channel schedule of the second node associated with the first mode that is different from a second channel schedule of the second node associated with a second mode, wherein the second mode is the other of the unicast mode or the broadcast mode.
