1. An assay device comprising:
a liquid sample addition zone;
a reagent zone downstream and in fluid communication with the liquid sample addition zone, the reagent zone containing a reagent material;
a detection zone in fluid communication with the reagent zone having capture elements bound thereto; and
a wicking zone in fluid communication with the detection zone having a capacity to receive a liquid sample flowing from the detection zone,
wherein the liquid sample addition zone, the reagent zone, the detection zone, and the wicking zone define a fluid flow path,
further comprising a reagent addition zone along and in fluid communication with the fluid flow path downstream from the liquid sample addition zone and upstream of the detection zone, the reagent addition zone having a width that is greater than a width of the fluid flow path and less than a width of the liquid sample addition zone to receive a reagent fluid from a reagent source,
wherein the liquid sample addition zone is configured to receive a sample and enable the sample to move through the fluid flow path, and
wherein the width of the reagent addition zone is configured to enable enough volume of the received reagent fluid to be added to the fluid flow path to interrupt flow of the sample through the fluid flow path and control a sample size of the sample within the fluid flow path.
