1. A method for determining the authenticity of an identity document comprising the steps of:
receiving, by an electronic device, an image captured of an identity document, the captured identity document image including facial image data and personal data of a person associated with the identity document and an identity document number;
extracting the personal data and the identity document number from the captured identity document image, the extracted personal data including at least a surname, the extracted identity document number including groups of characters that represent different items of personal data and information about an entity;
decoding a first group of the characters using a soundex coding algorithm, the decoded first group of characters representing the phonetic spelling of a second surname;
determining the second surname from the phonetic spelling;
comparing the second surname against the surname in the extracted personal data; and
determining the authenticity of the identity document using a result of said comparing step.
