1. A method at an asset tracking device, the method comprising:
activating a receiver of an intelligent transportation system transceiver at the asset tracking device;
receiving an intelligent transportation system message using the receiver;
determining that a certificate identifier from the intelligent transportation system message is found within a list of stored certificate identifiers at the asset tracking device;
based on determining that the certificate identifier is found within a list of stored certificate identifiers, determining a geographic position of the asset tracking device from geographic information within the intelligent transportation system message;
reporting the determined geographic position to a remote server; and
purging certificate identifiers from the list of stored certificate identifiers if the certificate identifiers have not been observed by the asset tracking device for a threshold time period.
