1. A wearable electronic device comprising:
a housing;
a set of light emitters configured to emit light;
a set of photodiodes disposed within the housing and comprising a first photodiode and a second photodiode;
a processor configured to:
cause prompting of a user of the wearable electronic device to perform a first type of gesture;
after prompting the user to perform the first type of gesture and during a first time period:
emit first light from the set of light emitters and toward the user from a portion of the wearable electronic device facing the user; and
collect first sensor data from the first and second photodiodes, the first sensor data based on a portion of the emitted first light reflected from the user;
determine a first set of signal characteristics from the first sensor data, the first set of signal characteristics corresponding to movement performed by the user in response to the prompting;
assign the first set of signal characteristics to the first type of gesture; and
after assigning the first set of signal characteristics to the first type of gesture, determine whether subsequently collected sensor data corresponds to the first set of signal characteristics.
