1. An optical apparatus comprising:
a first lens system;
a second lens system;
a substrate transparent to incident light;
a first waveguide including a first set of multiple beam splitting elements, the first set of multiple beam splitting elements arranged in a sequence along a first axis of the first waveguide, wherein the first waveguide is optically coupled to the first lens system; and
a second waveguide including a second set of multiple beam splitting elements, the second set of multiple beam splitting elements arranged in a sequence along a second axis of the second waveguide, wherein the second waveguide is optically coupled to the second lens system;
wherein the first and second waveguides are disposed in the substrate such that light reflected by a beam splitting element of the first set of multiple beam splitting elements passes between two or more beam splitting elements of the second set of multiple beam splitting elements, wherein a first surface of the first waveguide abuts a second surface of the second waveguide in the substrate, wherein the light reflected by the beam splitting element of the first set passes through the first and second surfaces, and wherein the first and second waveguides are configured to produce display images at corresponding overlapping virtual image planes horizontally offset from one another.
