20 Claims

1. A method comprising:

instantiating a plurality of edge clusters on one or more cloud computing platforms, the one or more cloud computing platforms connected to a wide area network (WAN);

instantiating a first application instance in the one or more cloud computing platforms and configuring a first edge cluster of the plurality of edge clusters to enable access to the first application instance, the first edge cluster executing in a first point of presence (POP) of the one or more cloud computing platforms and configured to control authentication and access to the first application instance executing within the one or more cloud computing platforms;

instantiating a second application instance in the one or more cloud computing platforms and configuring a second edge cluster of the plurality of edge clusters to enable access to the second application instance, the second edge cluster executing in a second POP of the one or more cloud computing platforms and configured to control authentication and access to the second application instance executing within the one or more cloud computing platforms;

creating, by a computing device external to the one or more cloud computing platforms and connected to the one or more cloud computing platforms by the WAN, a backup relationship between the first application instance and the second application instance;

(a) monitoring, by the computing device, accessibility of the first application instance externally from the one or more cloud computing platforms;

programming, by the computing device, routing logic of the one or more cloud computing platforms to route first network traffic addressed to a first address to the first edge cluster, the first edge cluster being configured to route the first network traffic from the first POP to the first application instance in the one or more cloud computing platforms;

(b) detecting, by the computing device, unavailability of the first application instance according to (a); and

in response to (b), programming, by the computing device, the routing logic of the one or more cloud computing platforms to route second network traffic addressed to the first address to the second edge cluster, the second edge cluster being configured to route the second network traffic from the second POP to the second application instance in the one or more cloud computing platforms.
