1. A method of alerting a user of a card, comprising:
determining, by a processor of a card reader, that the card is inserted into the card reader;
determining, by the processor of the card reader, an absence of the user within a vicinity of the card reader;
transmitting, by the processor to a mobile device of the user, a first message including a first code and indicating the card has not been retrieved from the card reader;
receiving, by the processor, entry of the first code;
transmitting, by the processor to the mobile device of the user, a second message including a second code;
receiving, by the processor, entry of the second code; and
instructing, by the processor, the card reader to release the card.
