1. An apparatus comprising:
a network interface;
a memory device storing data indicative of a set of symbols, the set of symbols including a plurality of configurable symbols and a plurality of non-configurable symbols, the plurality of configurable symbols including a mystery symbol; and
a controller executing instructions stored in the memory device which cause the controller to at least:
transmit, via the network interface and to a remote gaming device, instructions to initiate a first symbol presentation stage on a display of the remote gaming device;
generate a first symbol presentation by selecting a plurality of symbols;
transmit, via the network interface and to the remote gaming device, instructions for controlling the display to display the plurality of symbols at a plurality of display positions on the display device, wherein the plurality of symbols are selected from the configurable symbols and the non-configurable symbols;
transmit, via the network interface and to the remote gaming device, instructions to perform a second symbol presentation stage with an initial quantity of spins when a triggering number of configurable symbols are displayed in the first symbol presentation, wherein the instructions to perform the second symbol presentation stage indicate that, for each spin of the initial quantity of spins of the second symbol presentation stage, each configurable symbol will be kept at its corresponding display position;
select replacement symbols for non-configurable symbols in a plurality of display positions not occupied by kept configurable symbols;
determine a value for each displayed mystery symbol;
determine a second symbol presentation stage result based at least in part on a value of each of the configurable symbols, including each displayed mystery symbol, kept in the plurality of display positions; and
transmit, via the network interface and to the remote gaming device, instructions to present the second symbol presentation stage and the second symbol presentation stage result.
