1. A method comprising:
providing a composition comprising a reaction product of a saccharide polymer and diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) obtained under room temperature to heating conditions in the presence of a hydroxide base or in the presence of a radical initiator;
wherein the DADMAC is not polymerized in the reaction product;
exposing the composition to a clay-containing substance in need of contaminant remediation;
interacting the clay-containing substance with a frothing agent to form a froth bearing at least one metal contaminant separated from the clay-containing substance; and
separating the froth from the clay-containing substance.
