receiving information of a scanned bar code and a scanning location of the scanned bar code;
determining that the information of the scanned bar code is a result of a scan considered valid, based at least in part on the scanning location being within a predetermined geographical area;
determining a modification to a facet of a video game associated with at least some of the information of the scanned bar code, including;
determining if a value of the scanned bar code is within a first dataset that correlates bar code values with modifications to facets of the video game, and if so, determining the modification from the first dataset based on the value of the scanned bar code; and
if the value of the scanned bar code is not within the first dataset, determining that a value of a portion of the scanned bar code that represents a manufacturer is within a second dataset that correlates manufacturers with modifications to facets of the video game and determining the modification from the second dataset based on the value of the portion of the scanned bar code;
modifying the facet of the video game with the determined modification; and
providing for play of the video game.
