receiving, from a sensor of the article of footwear, a signal indicative of a competitive activity of a user wearing the article of footwear,
based on receiving the signal, operating in a lockout mode in which manual control of the control device is disabled;
while in the lockout mode, monitoring activity of the user to determine when the user wearing the article of footwear is engaging in a non-competitive activity based on the signal; and
upon determining that the user is engaging in the non-competitive activity, operating in an operating mode in which manual control of the device is enabled.
