1. A method comprising:
learning, by a transport network function (TNF), traffic engineering (TE) characteristics of links and nodes in a fifth generation wireless (5G) network via a northbound interface (Nn);
receiving, by the TNF, a source address, a destination address, and required bandwidth for a packet data unit (PDU) session via a service based interface (SBI) bus;
provisioning, by the TNF, a virtual private network (VPN) and a TE path from a 5G nodeB (gNB) to a user plane function (UPF) for the PDU session, the provisioning performed via a southbound interface (Ns); and
returning, by the TNF, a TE path identifier for the PDU session based on the source address, the destination address, and the required bandwidth.
