1. A router comprising:
an interface; and
processing circuitry having access to a memory, the processing circuitry configured to:
receive, via the interface, a packet of a forward packet flow;
determine that the router does not store a valid route for forwarding packets of a reverse packet flow for the forward packet flow via a first candidate interface;
based at least in part on determining that the router does not store the valid route for forwarding packets of the reverse packet flow via the first candidate interface, determine that the router stores a valid route for forwarding packets of the reverse packet flow via a second candidate interface; and
based at least in part on determining that the router stores a valid route for forwarding packets of the reverse packet flow via the second candidate interface, establish a stateful routing session using the second candidate interface for the reverse packet flow.
