1. An electrolyte composition comprising a compound having a structure as shown in Formula III:

wherein R1, R2, and R3 are the same or different and are independently selected from the group consisting of C1 to C6 linear or branched alkyl and halogen, and wherein at least one of R1, R2, or R3 is halogen;
“Spacer” is selected from the group consisting of C1 to C6 alkylene, alkenylene, and alkynylene; and
R4 is selected from the group consisting of cyano (—CN), cyanate (—OCN), isocyanate (—NCO), thiocyanate (—SCN) and isothiocyanate (—NCS);
in combination with a lithium-containing salt,
wherein the electrolyte composition undergoes no more than about 6% thermal decomposition when held at a temperature of about 150° C. for about 1 hour, with LiPF6 as the lithium-containing salt.
