1. A method of operating a gaming system, the method comprising:
responsive to an occurrence of a triggering event associated with a play of a game and a receipt, via an input device, of an input to skip the play of the game:
skipping the play of the game, and
independent of any play of any game:
causing, by a processor, a sporting event wager to be placed on an outcome of a sporting event, wherein the outcome of the sporting event is determined independent of the processor, the outcome of the sporting event is based on any action of a participant of the sporting event, and the sporting event wager is caused to be placed independent of reducing an amount of a displayed credit balance to fund the sporting event wager, and
causing, by the processor, a sporting event wager ticket associated with the placed sporting event wager to be available.
