1. A mechanical reel gaming machine comprising:
a cabinet;
a reel including a reel hub and plurality of symbols thereon;
a brushless motor including a rotor mounted on the reel hub; and
a controller electrically coupled to the motor, the controller comprising a processor configured to execute instructions stored in a memory, which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
generate a motor control signal; and
transmit the motor control signal to the motor to activate the motor and spin the reel on the cabinet.
