1. A method comprising:
implementing an electronic processor to perform a set of operations comprising:
extracting depth information from optical coherence tomography (OCT) data, including a superficial vascular plexus at a first depth and a capillary plexus at a second depth greater than the first depth;
identifying a reference capillary region within the capillary plexus having a predefined capillary structural configuration previously defined as being characteristic of one of vein or artery structure;
assigning one of a vein designation or an artery designation to the reference capillary region based on the predefined capillary structural configuration, wherein the predefined capillary structural configuration is based on physical, structural characteristics of capillaries within at least one of an intermediate capillary plexus (ICP) or a deep capillary plexus (DCP);
identifying a vascular connection between the reference capillary region and a first vascular structure within the superficial vascular plexus;
further assigning the vein designation or the artery designation that was assigned to the reference capillary region, to the first vascular structure within the superficial vascular plexus; and
at least one of storing or displaying the vein designation or the artery designation.
