1. A flat, multilayer, hyperspectral molecular sensor comprising:
a source emitting light of at least one wavelength;
a sample substrate having a surface for interacting with at least one type of molecule;
an illumination substrate comprising at least one illumination channel, each said illumination channel configured to propagate light having a wavelength for stimulating an emission signal lying within a portion of the emission spectrum of said at least one type of molecule;
a detector with a detection spectral bandwidth overlapping the emission spectrum of said at least one type of molecule;
an illumination beam switch, comprising at least one switching grating, for directing a spectral bandwidth portion of the light from said source into each of said illumination channels sequentially; and
an emission signal detection substrate comprising at least one emission signal detection channel supporting an optical structure for selectively coupling in and transmitting towards said detector an emission signal lying within a portion of said emission spectrum of said at least one type of molecule after excitation by said illumination.
