1. A controller for a breathing assistance apparatus, the breathing assistance apparatus comprising a conduit for conveying gases therein, the conduit comprising first and second segments that are integral or connectable to provide an extended conduit, the conduit further comprising circuitry, wherein the circuitry comprises at least one heater wire part configured to heat the gases in the conduit, in use, and at least one sensor wire part comprising at least one sensor configured to monitor a parameter of the gases in the conduit, in use, the controller being configured to:
receive a signal indicative of a presence or absence of one or both the first segment or the second segment so as to implement control dependent on which segment(s) is/are determined to be present or absent;
control application of an AC power waveform to the at least one heater wire part; and
control selective reading of the at least one sensor, wherein the controller is configured to read the at least one sensor at or about a particular portion of the AC power waveform provided to the at least one heater wire part.
