A method of selectively promoting on skin or a textile growth, metabolism, and/or colonization of good-odor associated bacteria selected from the group consisting of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Acinetobacter spp, Propionibacterium acnes and Enhydrobacter aerosaccus bacteria, and/or selectively inhibiting on skin or a textile the growth, metabolism, and/or colonization of malodor-associated bacteria comprising Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum, Corynebacterium amycolatum, Staphylococcus hominis, Micrococcus luteus, or Enterobacter cloacae, the method comprising:
administering or applying to the skin or textile a composition comprising an acid selected from the group consisting of, fumaric acid, mucic acid, γ-aminobutyric acid, α-keto-glutaric acid, quinic acid, D-saccharic acid, glyoxylic acid, D-glucosaminic acid, D,L-α-amino-caprylic acid, N-acetyl-neuraminic acid, D,L-α-amino-N-butyric acid, orotic acid, ε-amino-N-caproic acid, β-hydroxybutyric acid, tropic acid, hippuric acid, and any combination thereof.
