1. A surgical stapling system comprising:
an end effector comprising:
a first jaw having a carrier configured to receive a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples, and
a second jaw including an anvil configured to deform staples ejected from the staple cartridge, wherein at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw is pivotable relative to the other one of the first jaw and the second jaw about a closure axis between an open configuration and a closed configuration of the end effector; and
a firing system comprising:
a drive train configured to advance to deploy staples from the staple cartridge, and
an electro-mechanical lockout controllable, based on a characteristic of the staple cartridge, to switch between an unlocked configuration in which the drive train is allowed to advance to deploy the staples from the staple cartridge and a locked configuration in which the drive train is prevented from advancing to deploy the staples from the staple cartridge,
wherein the electro-mechanical lockout includes a latch and the drive train includes a lockout hole configured to receive the latch when the electro-mechanical lockout is switched to the locked configuration to prevent the drive train from advancing to deploy the staples from the staple cartridge.
