1. An image decoding method performed by a decoding apparatus, the method comprising:
obtaining reference line index information indicating whether a multi-reference line is used for intra prediction of a current block from a bitstream,
wherein a value of the reference line index information being equal to 0 represents that the multi-reference line is not used for the intra prediction of the current block, and
wherein the value of the reference line index information being not equal to 0 represents that the multi-reference line is used for the intra prediction of the current block;
deriving Most Probable Mode (MPM) candidates of the current block, based on the value of the reference line index information;
deriving an intra prediction mode for the current block based on the MPM candidates;
generating prediction samples for the current block based on the intra prediction mode; and
generating reconstructed samples for the current block based on the prediction samples,
wherein a number of the MPM candidates for the current block is variably determined depending on whether the multi-reference line is used for the intra prediction of the current block,
wherein based on the value of the reference line index information being not equal to 0, the number of the MPM candidates for the current block is determined as 5, and
wherein based on the value of the reference line index information being equal to 0, the number of the MPM candidates for the current block is determined as 6.
