1. An image decoding method performed by a decoding apparatus, the method comprising:
obtaining image information including prediction mode information and residual information from a bitstream;
determining a prediction mode for a current block as an interprediction mode using a symmetric motion vector differences (SMVD) based on the prediction mode information;
deriving reference picture lists including L0 and L1 for the current block;
deriving picture order count (POC) differences between each of reference pictures and a current picture, for each of the L0 and the L1;
deriving motion information including a reference picture index for each of the L0 and the L1 based on the POC differences;
generating predicted samples of the current block based on the motion information;
generating residual samples of the current block based on the residual information; and
generating reconstructed samples of the current block based on the predicted samples and the residual samples,
wherein the reference picture index for the L0 is derived based on a short-term reference picture included in the L0, and
wherein the reference picture index for the L1 is derived based on a short-term reference picture included in the L1.
