1. A coherent optical receiver, comprising:
equalizer circuitry having a plurality of taps, the equalizer circuitry being configured to (i) receive an input signal and (ii) compensate for polarization mode dispersion affecting the input signal to generate a compensated input signal;
error evaluation circuitry configured to
calculate a determinant of a frequency-domain (FD) coefficient-based matrix using a plurality of tap signals from among the plurality of taps, and
determine an error of convergence corresponding to transmission delays of symbols of the compensated input signal; and
timing recovery circuitry configured to adjust phase of the compensated input signal based on the determined error of convergence.
