1. An image decoding method comprising:
obtaining, from a bitstream, first information indicating a split type of a coding unit between a quad split type and a non-quad split type including a tri split type;
when it is determined that the split type of the coding unit is the non-quad split type using the first information, obtaining, from the bitstream, second information about a maximum size of a coding unit with a width and a height ratio equal to 1:4;
determining the maximum size of the coding unit with the width and the height ratio equal to 1:4 using the second information;
determining a minimum size of the coding unit with the width and the height ratio equal to 1:4;
when it is determined that the coding unit is allowable to be split into three lower coding units using the maximum size of the coding unit with the width and the height ratio equal to 1:4 and the minimum size of the coding unit with the width and the height ratio equal to 1:4, dividing a longer side between the width and the height of the coding unit in three to split the coding unit into the three lower coding units and decode the three lower coding units; and
when it is determined that the split type of the coding unit is the quad split type using the first information, splitting the coding unit into four lower coding units and decode the four lower coding units.
