1. A method for processing data in an Ethernet protocol stack, comprising:
receiving, at a processing device, client data for transmission via an Ethernet bus, and
determining, by the processing device, whether to transmit the client data over the Ethernet bus by one of a packet switching or a non-packet-switching transmission mode based on an identity of an originating client device, and
in response to determining to transmit the client data over the Ethernet bus by non-packet-switching transmission, bypassing a MAC layer by using a time-division multiplexing shim layer between a PHY layer and a MAC layer.
