1. A system for measuring characteristics, comprising:
a periodically changing directed energy source having a directed energy output, incident on an object undergoing additive manufacturing, configured to excite a thermal wave which propagates in the object undergoing additive manufacturing;
a sensor configured to measure temporal and amplitude thermal response characteristics of the propagating thermal wave in at least a portion of the object undergoing additive manufacturing proximate to a directed location of the periodically changing directed energy source; and
at least one processor, configured to perform a periodic signal analysis of the measured temporal and amplitude thermal response characteristics of the propagating thermal wave, to determine presence of a manufacturing defect in the object undergoing additive manufacturing, before completion of manufacturing.
