1. A method of securing a catheter relative to a skin penetration point, comprising:
advancing a catheter through a skin penetration point;
inserting first and second anchors of an anchor device through the skin penetration point and into a subcutaneous region proximate the skin penetration point while an external retainer assembly of the anchor device remains external to the skin penetration point and connected to the first and second subcutaneous anchors; and
securing an exterior surface of the catheter in a channel defined by a base of the external retainer assembly and a cap releasably mounted to the base of the external retainer assembly so that the catheter is anchored relative to the skin penetration point, the channel having a noncircular cross-sectional shape that is different than a cross-sectional shape of the catheter and is in a plane perpendicular to a central axis of the catheter; and
wherein the cap is releasably mounted to the base of the external retainer assembly by mating non-symmetric engagement structures of the base with corresponding non-symmetrical engagement structures of the cap while the catheter is within the channel.
