1. A method performed by a first network device, the method comprising:
operating in a receive cycling mode by repeatedly:
executing the first network device in a low data rate (LDR) receive mode for a first time interval;
upon expiration of the first time interval, transitioning the first network device from the LDR receive mode to a high data rate (HDR) receive mode;
executing the first network device in the HDR receive mode for a second time interval; and
upon expiration of the second time interval, transitioning the first network device from the HDR receive mode to the LDR receive mode; and
while operating in the receive cycling mode, receiving, at the first network device, a portion of a message from a second network device;
transitioning, based at least in part on the receiving of the portion of the message, the first network device out of the receive cycling mode.
