1. An apparatus comprising:
a port to couple to a device over an interconnect, wherein the port comprises:
protocol circuitry to support negotiation of an alternate protocol during training of a link on the interconnect, wherein a physical layer of the link is to be based on a Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) protocol, the alternate protocol comprises a non-PCIe protocol, and the protocol circuitry is to:
receive a training set 1 (TS1) ordered set from the device over the interconnect, wherein the TS1 ordered set indicates support for negotiation of the alternate protocol;
receive a first modified TS1 ordered set over the interconnect, wherein the first modified TS1 ordered set requests whether the alternate protocol is supported and comprises a field to indicate details of the alternate protocol; and
send a second modified TS1 ordered set to the device over the interconnect, wherein the second modified TS1 ordered set confirms that the alternate protocol is supported.
