1. A method for labeling a protein, comprising:
providing a protein of formula (IV) comprising a nucleophilic group (Nu) at a point of desired labeling:
R-Nu, (IV)
wherein R-Nu is R—SH or R—NH2;
reacting the protein of formula (IV) with a compound of formula (V) having both a label and a reporter group:

R4 is H;
Y is O;
L is a linking group comprising —(CH2CH2O)n—, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 10, and the reaction results in releasing of the reporter and formation of a labeled protein of formula (VI)
