1. A method of receiving data, comprising:
receiving a signal via a communication channel having a channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) using a receiver comprising a demodulator, a demapper, and a decoder;
demodulating the received signal into a demodulated signal using the demodulator;
providing the demodulated signal to the demapper via a coupling between the demodulator and the demapper;
determining likelihoods using the demapper based upon the demodulated signal and a symbol constellation selected from a plurality of symbol constellations that includes a group of symbol constellations that each have the same number of constellation points and comprise a ring of constellation points that are unequally spaced along the ring; and
providing the determined likelihoods to the decoder via a coupling between the demapper and the decoder; and
providing a sequence of received bits from the decoder using the determined likelihoods to provide a sequence of received bits based upon a low density parity check (LDPC) code;
wherein labels and spacing of the constellation points in each of the symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations are arranged such that the symbol constellation is capable of providing a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to a similar symbol constellation that differs only in that the constellation points in the ring are equally spaced around the ring.
