1. A method of operating a photoionization detector, the method comprising:
applying a first electric potential to a counter electrode on a top surface of an electrically insulative substrate;
applying a second electric potential to a sensing electrode on a bottom surface of the electrically insulative substrate;
applying a third electric potential to a third electrode having a pin mounting hole positioned for a first pin to pass therethrough the substrate and electrically separate the sensing electrode from the counter electrode; and
causing ionization of gas in a cavity of the electrically insulative substrate.
