1. A method for improving renal function of a patient, comprising:
using an occluding element that is placed in an inferior vena cava of the patient at a location that is downstream of a renal vein ostium, at least partially mechanically occluding the inferior vena cava of the patient downstream of the renal vein ostium, such as to form a compartment within the inferior vena cava that is isolated from a downstream region of the inferior vena cava that is downstream of the renal vein ostium; and
using a blood pump that is separate from the occluding element, and that is placed in the compartment, mechanically pumping blood through the inferior vena cava from the compartment to a discharge location in the downstream region while the inferior vena cava is at least partially occluded, wherein the blood remains in the inferior vena cava throughout the mechanical pumping of the blood from the compartment to the discharge location.
